About Me...

Aspiring Astronomer and Poet

“You may think I'm small, but I have a universe inside my head.” - Yoko Ono

This quote stands out to me because I find it relatable. While I'm on the shorter side physically, I believe in having an active mind. Multiple times, people have commented that I look younger than I really am. Nevertheless, not only do I use my mind to write poems and occasionally engage in other creative activities when I have time, but I'm also working toward a career in astronomy.

So, if you've ever felt as if you've come to Earth from some other world in order to understand the human species, we have something in common. Or, if you've ever noticed that somehow, even though characters in movies and other works are fictional, they seem to walk you home from where you've just watched them, we also have something in common. If your eyes are automatically drawn to the sky to check for clearness whenever you're outside, even in broad daylight, well, you know...

Dream Job...

I'm working toward a career as a professional astronomer and poet.

I wish I could say it was my childhood dream to be an astronomer. The reality is that I did not recognize this ultimate goal until college...during a general education class I took while working toward my BA degree in English with minors in Spanish and psychology! So, I went on to complete a BS degree in physics with a minor in astronomy.

I'm now in grad school working toward a PhD in physics with an astronomy concentration.

Overall, I need several areas of thought and study in my life, since I feel more complete that way.

Meanwhile, I have been writing poems by hand, and by typing, since before college. Someday, I'd love to publish books of my poems!

Movies and Shows:

Contact - So inspirational to me as a female in the sciences.

Apollo 13 - Everyone portrayed in the movie (those in space and those on the ground alike) all seemed so real and human in a way I thoroughly enjoy!

Star Wars - So who cares if it's not exactly what you'd all scientifically accurate? It has wonderful character development journeys and good vs. evil themes. Enough said.

Back to the Future - Because time travel.

Sylvia - Well, it's about one of my favorite poets.

13 Reasons Why - I just found it captivating.

I enjoy certain songs with lyrics, but it's hard to define one particular type I listen to. I'm not a fan of rap, but I can be a fan of some vintage or lesser-known music.

Books, Stories, Comics:

Poetry is one of my favorite things to read and write! The Bell Jar (actually written in prose by Sylvia Plath), which I read in high school, is pretty high on my list of books for its personal first-person narration style. Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Dorianne Laux, and Emily Dickinson are a few writers I sometimes turn to for inspiration because of their confessional or unique styles. I've also occasionally read or listened to science fiction such as Star Wars.

Once I made a scrapbook of watercolor paintings! They're not the type you would find in an art museum, but they're creative, unique designs I'm proud of. I've also tried drawing every once in a while, and I've been okay at it.

I'm not a huge video gamer, but I've played Battlefront II (I think it was the old one) a handful of times (not always successfully).

As long as it doesn't involve ketchup, there's at least a 95% chance it's something I would eat. If you especially love seafood or Asian foods like crab rangoon, we have something in common!
